Kapitel 77

1. Das vierte Gebot, wie ihr es auf der Erde habt, lautet: „Ehre Vater und Mutter, auf daß du lange lebest und es dir wohlgehe auf Erden“. – Dieses Gebot ist so gut göttlichen Ursprunges wie die ersten drei. Was gebietet es aber und was verheißt es? Nichts anderes als den Gehorsam der Kinder gegen ihre Eltern und für diesen Gehorsam eine zeitliche Vergünstigung.

2. Kann da nicht jedermann fragen und sagen: Wie, ein göttliches Gebot sanktioniert sich bloß durch zeitliche Verheißungen und hat nichts Ersichtliches im Hintergrunde, darin ewige geistige Vorteile geboten würden? Was liegt wohl an solch einer zeitlichen Vergünstigung? Was liegt am Wohlleben, was am langen Leben, wenn nach demselben nichts Höheres folgt?

3. Es ist wahr: gut und lange leben ist besser als kurz und schlecht. Wenn aber am Ende des Lebensabschnitts der unwirtliche Tod erscheint, welchen Vorzug hat das gute und lange Leben vor dem schlechten und kurzen? Ich meine, dazu braucht man eben kein Fundamental-Mathematiker zu sein, um sagen zu können: der Unterschied läuft überall in eine reine Null aus; denn der erste überkommt so gut wie der zweite ein barstes Nichts, und es fragt sich dann wenig, wie der Weg zu diesem Empfange beschaffen war, ob gut oder schlecht.

4. Also wäre denn, nach diesem Maßstabe betrachtet, das vierte Gebot auf einem sehr schlüpfrigen Grunde basiert, und die Eltern wären fürwahr übel daran, so ihre Kinder mit solcher Philosophie schon auf die Welt geboren würden, und die Kinder selbst würden bei solcher Betrachtung wenig Grund finden, ihren Eltern zu gehorchen. – Ferner läßt sich über dieses Gebot noch folgende kritische Betrachtung anstellen. Wie das Gebot klingt, so hat es nur eine zeitliche Basis, also bloß die Pflicht der Kinder gegen ihre Eltern darstellend.

5. Es fragt sich demnach: Was soll es denn mit diesem Gebote hier im Geisterreiche, wo die Kinder ihren Eltern auf ewig enthoben sind? Sind sie aber ihrer Eltern enthoben, da werden sie doch sicher auch der irdischen Pflicht gegen sie enthoben sein. Dennoch bemerken wir hier in diesem vierten Saale dieses Gebot auf der Tafel gezeichnet. Soll es etwa für diese Kinder auf den Herrn bezogen werden? Das ließe sich allerdings hören, wenn darunter nur nicht der Verheißungssatz stände: „Auf daß du lange lebest und es dir wohl gehe auf Erden“. – Stünde da: „Auf daß du ewig lebest und es dir wohl gehe im Himmel“, da wäre eine solche Transversion des Gesetzes gar leicht zu verstehen; aber eine zeitliche Verheißung im ewigen Reiche der Geister klingt denn doch etwas sonderbar.

6. Was meinet ihr wohl, was sich hier wird tun lassen, um diesem Gesetze ein vollgegründetes göttliches Ansehen zu verschaffen? Ihr zucket da freilich mit den Achseln und saget ganz leise in euch: Lieber Freund und Bruder! Wenn es hier auf unsere Erörterung ankommt, da wird es mit der reingeistiggöttlichen Sphäre dieses Gesetzes einen bedeutenden Haken haben; denn nach obiger Betrachtung läßt sich da mit leichter Mühe so, wie man glaubt, eben nicht gar zuviel Geistiges herausfinden.

7. Ich sage euch aber, daß eben dieses Gebot, wie beinahe kein anderes, rein geistig ist. Ihr machet nun zwar große Augen; aber darum ist die Sache doch nicht anders. Damit ihr aber solches auf einen Hieb erschauet, so will ich nichts anderes tun, als dieses Gesetz mit etwas umgeänderten Worten sagen, wie es auch hier in diesem Lehrsaale vorgetragen wird, und ihr werdet die Fülle der Wahrheit sogleich erschauen. Wie aber lautet es hier? – Höret!

8. Kinder! Gehorchet der Ordnung Gottes, welche ausgeht aus Seiner Liebe und Weisheit (d.i. Vater und Mutter), auf daß ihr lange lebet auf Erden unter Wohlergehen. Was ist langes Leben, und was ist dagegen ewiges Leben? Das „lange Leben“ bezeichnet das Leben in der Weisheit; und es wird „lang“ nicht als Dauer, sondern als Ausbreitung und stets größere Mächtigwerdung des Lebens verstanden; denn das Wort oder der Begriff „Leben“ schließt ja schon für sich die ewige Dauer ein. Aber das Wort „lang“ bedeutet durchaus keine Dauer, sondern nur eine Ausbreitung der Lebenskraft, mit welcher das lebende Wesen stets mehr in die Tiefen des göttlichen Lebens gelanget, und eben dadurch sein eigenes Leben stets vollkommener, fester und wirksamer macht.

9. Dieses hätten wir; aber das „Wohlergehen auf Erden“ – was besagt denn das? Nichts anderes als das Sich-zu-eigen-machen des göttlichen Lebens, denn unter der „Erde“ wird hier das Eigenwesen verstanden, und das Wohlergehen in diesem Wesen ist nichts anderes als das freie Sein in sich selbst nach der völlig sich zu eigen gemachten göttlichen Ordnung.

10. Diese kurze Erklärung genügt, um einzusehen, daß eben dieses Gesetz völlig rein geistiger Art ist. Wenn ihr es bei Muße genauer nachprüfen wollet, so werdet ihr es auf eigener Erde finden, daß es also ist. Also aber wird es auch hier praktisch den Kindern beigebracht, und das mit dem größten Nutzen.

Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long and you may prosper on earth.

Chapter 77

1. The fourth commandment, as you have it on earth, is: “Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long and you may prosper on earth.” – This commandment is as good of Divine origin as the first three. But what does it require and what does it promise? Nothing but the obedience of the children to their parents and for this obedience, a temporal benefit.

2. Can everyone not ask and say: How can such a divine commandment sanction itself through mere temporal promises and has apparently nothing in the background which offers eternal spiritual advantages? What is up with such a temporal benefit? What does the well-being mean, what the long life, if nothing higher follows after it?

3. It’s true: a good and long life is better than short and bad. But when, at the end of the life-period, the inhospitable death appears, and what advantage does the good and long life have above the bad and short? I mean, you do not need to be a fundamental mathematician to say that the difference is overall a pure zero; for the first as well as the second overcome a bare nothing, and then it matters very little whether the road to this reception was good or bad.

4. By this measure, the Fourth Commandment would be based on a very slippery ground, and the parents would indeed be sick of it, if their children were born into the world with such philosophy, and the children themselves would find little reason in such consideration, to obey her parents. Furthermore, the following critical consideration can be made of this commandment: As the commandment sounds, it has only a temporal basis, that is, merely representing the duty of the children toward their parents.

5. The question then arises: What is the purpose of this commandment here in the spiritual realm, where the children are separated from their parents forever? For if they are separated from their parents, surely they will be relieved of their earthly duty. Nevertheless, here in this fourth hall we notice this commandment written on the blackboard. Should it be related to the Lord for these children? This could be heard, however, if only the prophecy did not stand under it: “To live long and to live on earth?” If it were there: “To live forever and to live well in heaven”, such a transversion of the law would be easy to understand; but a temporal promise in the eternal realm of the spirits sounds a bit strange.

6. What do you think, what will be done here, to give this law a fully established Divine prestige? Of course you shrug your shoulders and say quietly in yourselves: Dear friend and brother! If it would depend on our discretion here, then there will be a significant snag with the purely Divine sphere of this law; for, according to the above consideration, one would think it is easy to find not too much spirituality here.

7. But I tell you that exactly this commandment, like almost no other, is purely spiritual. You are now making big eyes; but the thing is no different. But in order to see this at once, I will do nothing but say this law with slightly different words, as it is also said here in this lecture, and you will immediately see the fullness of the truth. But how is it said here? – Listen!

8. Children! Obey the order of God, which proceeds from His love and wisdom (ie father and mother), so that you may live long on earth in well-being. What is long life, and what is eternal life compared to it? The “long life”. denotes life in wisdom; and “long” is understood not as duration, but as expansion and ever greater power of life; for the word or the concept “life” already implies eternal duration. But the word “long” does not mean any duration, but only a spreading of the life-force, with which the living being always gets deeper into the depths of Divine life, and thereby makes his own life more and more perfect, firm, and effective.

9. This we now understand; but “well-being on earth” what does that mean? Nothing other than the taking-unto-self of the Divine life, for by the “earth” here is meant the proper being, and the “well-being” in this being is nothing other than the free being in itself, according to the completely taken-unto-self Divine order.

10. This short explanation is enough to see that this very law is completely of a purely spiritual nature. If you want to check it out more at your leisure, you will find it to be so on your own earth. But here too, it is practically taught to the children, and with the greatest benefit. But now that we know this, we immediately proceed to the fifth room.
