Let us dive into the Depths of the spiritual Battlefield Teaching about Pride and Narcissism – Sermon by C.S. Lewis This topic carries the weight of divine revelation, truth and hope. Narcissism is a profound Distortion of the Soul, a self-absorbed prideful way of living that exalts the self above all else, even God Himself. But rest assured, God in His wisdom and justice does not leave this unchecked. In His sovereignty God always acts, always intervenes and seeks to redeem even the most hardened hearts. Let us explore three profound ways in which God always deals with a narcissist. Number one… God shatters their illusion of control. The narcissist in his blind arrogance believes he is The Sovereign of his own Universe. His every breath, thought and decision is driven by a desire to maintain control. He fashions his life like an emperor building a grand Kingdom. His success and identity is rooted in the firm conviction that he alone is the master of his fate. But the truth is far more humbling. The throne he sits upon while seemingly unshakable is an illusion. A fragile construct of pride, self-centeredness and arrogance – easily undone by the hand of the Almighty. And when that moment arrives, when God shatters their illusion of control, everything changes. Picture for a moment the narcissist sitting at the top of his towering, self-made Throne, convinced of its permanence. He manipulates, deceives and twists the world to fit his desires, wealth, power and reputation. These become the pillars on which he rests his identity. He is convinced that he is untouchable – superior to all and that no force in this world or the next can dethrone him. But the throne he sits upon is not made of stone or gold but of sand. It is a mirage, a hollow shell that though it may appear solid from the outside crumbles at the slightest touch of the waves of Life. Sickness, failure, betrayal or loss begin to crash relentlessly upon this Throne. Each wave a reminder of the fragility of human pride. The narcissist for all his calculated control finds his fortress crumbling. God in His Divine Justice allows this unraveling and with each loss the narcissist is brought closer to the truth. He is not the master of his own fate but a mere vessel in the hands of a sovereign Creator. Consider the story of King Nebuchadnezzar, a ruler, whose arrogance reached the heavens. In Daniel 4:30, the king declared… Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the Royal residence by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty? He believed that his kingdom built by his own might and brilliance would stand forever. Yet God humbled him, He stripped him of his royal dignity and cast him into the wilderness, where he lived like an animal, eating grass and experiencing the complete loss of everything he held dear. It was then, when Nebuchadnezzar in his utter desolation looked to the heavens and acknowledged God’s Supreme sovereignty, that his mind was restored and his kingdom was returned to him. This is the fate of a narcissist. To be humbled by the very hand he once denied, until he acknowledges that there is no power but God’s. There are times in life, when God removes the crutches that narcissists rely upon for their sense of worth. These crutches might take the form of wealth, influence, adoration or even the illusion of invincibility. It is not that God delights in causing pain, but rather that He in His infinite Wisdom knows that without the removal of these crutches the narcissist will never see the futility of his self-reliance. Without being brought to the brink of destruction, he may never turn to the one who can rebuild what he has broken. This is where I ask you to pause and reflect. As you listen to these words, ask yourself, are you too clinging to any illusion of control? Are there areas in your life where you feel that your power, influence or your self sufficiency can shield you from the storms of life. These things, though they may seem to offer security are but sand beneath your feet. God in His love and mercy may allow them to slip away so that you may truly see that He alone is your Refuge. It is a painful but necessary process. Do not mistake God’s removal of your crutches for cruelty. He does not shatter your Illusions to destroy you, but rather to rebuild you. He dismantles the false idols you have placed in your life so that He may be the Cornerstone of your existence. He shatters your illusions to restore you to the fullness of His grace to lead you into a deeper relationship with Him. Just as a sculptor chisels away at block of marble to reveal the beauty hidden within, so too does God in his Mercy refine us through the breaking of our false sense of security. Let this truth settle in your heart. God shatters the illusion of control, not for our destruction but for our Redemption. He desires to free us from the tyranny of self-reliance, to draw us closer to Himself. The moment we acknowledge that we are not in control, and that our strength is but a fleeting breath, that is the moment we open ourselves to the fullness of God’s power. I implore you to consider this… Are you allowing God to remove the crutches from your life? Are you willing to embrace the pain of seeing your Illusions shattered so that you can stand firm upon the solid rock of Christ? For in this process God is not just breaking you, He is remaking and restoring you to the person He created you to be. Trust in Him, for He is the one true master. And though your world may tremble and your throne fall, know that in the end it is only in Him, where you will find true security, true peace and true purpose. Number two… God confronts a narcissist’s pride with truth. Pride is the lifeblood of a narcissist, the very air he breathes, the foundation upon which he builds his entire existence. It is both – his driving force and his greatest defense – an impenetrable fortress that guards his heart. The narcissist clings to pride as if it is his one true ally, erecting walls to protect himself from the truth. But there is one truth that no fortress of pride can withstand, the truth of God. It is a force that breaks through every barrier, exposes every lie and lays bare the soul. God’s truth is not a delicate whisper it is a force that cuts deep, a double-edged sword wielded by the Creator Himself. The writer of Hebrews 4:12 speaks of this power. For the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It penetrates even to the dividing of Soul and Spirit, Joints and Marrow. It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Imagine the sharpness of that blade penetrating to the very core of a person’s being. It exposes the hidden motives the false beliefs and the prideful deceptions that have been nurtured for so long. When God speaks His truth to a narcissist, it is not condemn him but to reveal the stark reality of his spiritual state. This truth does not merely scratch the surface, it cuts through the layers of self-deception and pride, forcing the narcissist to confront the ugliness that lies beneath God’s truth, which is not a punishment but an invitation. A merciful invitation to repentance and transformation. It is a mirror that reflects not the image he has carefully crafted but the truth of who he truly is in the eyes of the holy and just God. There is something extraordinary about the way God convicts the heart. Conviction is not the same as condemnation, it is not a cruel punishment nor is it a heavy-handed rebuke. Conviction is the gentle yet insistent tug of the Holy Spirit urging the soul to repent, to turn from pride and towards the mercy of God. It is Still Small Voice that whispers to the heart, you are not in control and not the master of your destiny. There is one who is greater, one who calls you to humble yourself before Him. This conviction is a gift – it is God’s mercy in action – giving the narcissist an opportunity to choose a different path. But make no mistake, conviction requires a response. It is here in this sacred moment that the battle for the heart truly intensifies. The pride that has long ruled over his life fights to maintain its grip, resisting the invitation to humility and repentance. The question is, will he respond, will he hear the call and surrender or will he continue to live in the illusion of his own greatness. Pride is the complete anti-god state of mind, pride is the root of all sin, it is the very essence of rebellion against God. As long as pride reigns in the heart, true repentance is impossible. This is why God’s confrontation with truth is such an act of mercy. It is not to punish the narcissist or any soul for that matter, but to offer them a chance, an opportunity to humble themselves. To choose life over destruction, to embrace the truth over the lie. As you listen to these words, consider this… Have you ever experienced the convicting power of God’s truth? Have you ever felt the sword of His word cut through your own pride, exposing the lies you have told yourself? It is a painful experience, but it is also a holy one. It is in these moments – when we are confronted with the reality of who we are before God – when true transformation begins. God does not confront us with truth to break us down but to rebuild. He does not expose our pride to humiliate us but to offer us the gift of Grace, to show us the way to true humility. Remember, this pride is a fortress, but it is built on sand. It may stand for a time but it will crumble when confronted with the truth of God. And when it does, when the walls of pride come crashing down, you will find that God is not there to condemn you, but to lift you up, to restore you to the image He created you to be. So I ask you to listen to these words. Will you allow the truth of God to confront your pride? Will you open your heart to His conviction no matter how uncomfortable it may feel? Will you surrender the illusion of control and embrace the mercy that God extends to you? For when you do, you will experience the greatest freedom, freedom that comes from laying down your pride, from acknowledging that you are not the center of the universe but a beloved child of the most high. And in that moment, when the truth has shattered the walls of pride, you will know the deepest peace that comes from living in alignment with the one who is The Truth, The Way and The Life. God is calling you, not to a life of self-sufficiency and pride, but to a life of humility, surrender and grace. Will you answer that call? Number three… God extends grace but never without justice. The heart of God is always inclined toward redemption. In every situation He is driven by an unwavering desire to restore, to heal and to save. His grace is freely extended especially to those who seem the least deserving even when confronting the pride and self-centeredness of a narcissist. God offers grace, an undeserved gift, a chance to repent, to change and to embrace a new life in Christ. This grace is not offered arbitrarily or without purpose, it is not given to ignore the wrong but to invite the sinner to redemption. But let us be clear, His grace never negates His justice. In Psalm 89:14 it is written… Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne, love and faithfulness go before you. These words echo the profound truth, that God’s nature is perfectly balanced between righteousness and justice, and between love and faithfulness. His justice does not overlook sin, but His love calls for repentance and restoration. This balance is most evident in how God deals with those who are trapped in their own narcissism. You may wonder how does God extend grace to someone so self-absorbed someone who is blind to their own destructive behavior. The answer lies in the nature of God’s justice and grace. God sees the sin, the pride and the harm caused. But He does not rush to judgment without first giving the chance for repentance. His grace is not a passive allowance, it is an active invitation to transformation. For some this grace manifests as a wakeup call. Sudden clarity, perhaps a moment of self-realization where they see the devastation their narcissism has brought into their lives and the life of others. It could be an overwhelming recognition of the brokenness of their ways. How far they have wandered from the Heart of God. For others God’s grace may come in the form of persistent prayers. The loving efforts of those who refuse to give up on them through the faithful love of family, friends and even strangers. They are continually pointed toward the light of Christ. Grace does not force change, it invites it. The narcissist may hear the call of grace but they are never coerced into accepting it. It is a choice, a Divine gift, waiting to be embraced. But there is a sobering reality, we must face grace, and when rejected leaves only judgment. The refusal to acknowledge grace is in itself a decision to cling to pride, and to reject the possibility of change. Proverbs 16:18 warns us: Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. There is a cost to pride that is paid in the form of separation from God’s healing power. For the narcissist who refuses to repent, the consequence of their actions will inevitably unfold. It is not a matter of Divine retribution, it is the natural result of clinging to sin. When we choose to reject grace to remain in the darkness of our own making the walls of pride grow higher and the light of God’s love is obscured by our own refusal to see. Yet even in judgment we must remember that God’s purpose is never solely to punish but to restore, even in the consequences of our choices. God is working toward our Redemption, His Justice is always rooted in the hope of ultimate restoration. The story of the prodigal son as recounted in Luke Chapter 15:11-32 stands as a timeless testament to God’s redemptive heart. The son lost in selfishness and pride squandered his inheritance in reckless living, yet when he reached the lowest point when he was empty and broken returned to his father and he welcomed him with open arms. This story is a vivid picture of the balance between grace and justice. The father did not deny the son’s wrongdoing he did not overlook the rebellion, the selfishness or the harm caused but when the son repented, the grace of the father was freely given. His justice was not compromised, for there were consequences to the son’s actions, but the Father’s Heart was always bent toward restoration. In this story, all of us are the prodigal sons and daughters. We have all at times wandered away, consumed by pride, selfishness and the desire to live for ourselves. Yet God in His infinite Mercy never closes the door to Redemption. He waits for our return offering grace that transforms, heals and restores. I want to pause here and invite you to reflect, where you find yourself in this narrative. Perhaps you or someone you know has been consumed by pride and the desires of self-centeredness. Maybe you have been on the receiving end of narcissistic behavior, hurt by the arrogance and indifference of others. I want to remind you that God’s grace is available, but it requires humility to receive it. The heart of God is always toward Redemption and His Grace is waiting for you. But justice will follow the rejection of that grace. The moment of repentance, the moment of turning away from the destructive power of pride marks the beginning of healing. Will you humble yourself? Will you step into the grace God is extending to you? Let this be a moment of reflection, let this be the moment where you turn your heart towards God, embracing the grace He offers, knowing that in His Justice He longs to restore you. As we conclude this exploration, let us reflect on the profound truth of God’s dealings with the narcissist. Our journey has revealed three Divine acts that God always performs… He shatters a narcissist’s illusion of control, confronts his pride with truth and extends grace while upholding justice. Each of these actions is an expression of God’s relentless love, His unyielding justice and His deep desire for Redemption. For the narcissist these interventions are not acts of vengeance but Divine invitations. God seeks to awaken them to the reality of their need for Him, a reality obscured by pride, self-deception and the desire for control. His shattering hand is not meant to destroy but to rebuild. His truth is not meant condemn but to convict and His grace is not a dismissal of justice but a bridge to repentance. Yet the choice remains theirs. Will they yield to God’s intervention, humble themselves and accept his transformative grace or will they resist, clinging to their Illusions until the weight of their pride leads to a fall? The answer to this question carries eternal significance. Perhaps this message is not only for someone else, God’s word speaks to all of us. Is there a part of your heart that clings to control? Is there pride that resists God’s truth? If so, let this be your moment of surrender. Remember the same God who seeks to redeem the Narcissist seeks to transform each of us as well. His grace is sufficient, His love unending and His plans are perfect. As written in the ‘problem of pain’… ‘God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains. It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world, a narcissism as weak as you and me. God’s work is always an act of Love, so let us not wait for the megaphone of pain to hear His voice, instead let us surrender now by acknowledging His sovereignty, embracing His truth and walking in the freedom only He can give. May this message stir your heart and bring you closer to the one, who knows you fully, loves completely and desires your transformation. God is always at work in the narcissist and in us. Trust His process, yield to His will and experience the life-changing power of His grace… Amen. |
