The Lord explains the Origin and Curse of Wealth THE GREAT GOSPEL OF JOHN – Volume 9, Chapter 55 The splendor of the table during the morning meal 1. After I had finished this explanation, the innkeeper came with his healed son to tell us that the morning meal would soon be put to the table. And at the same time he asked Me respectfully for advice, to know what he should do, for his wife and children were continuously bothering him, that he should tell them who I am and from where I came, since I was able to make the blind eye of his son completely healthy again without any remedy whatsoever. He, as well as his son, did not want to betray Me, for I forbade them. 2. Yet I said: “Since I will be on My way after the morning meal anyway, you may then reveal to them who I am and from where I came, because if you were to tell them right now, My presence would soon be known in the whole city, and then you would truly be in trouble, for the people would crowd in your house. After My departure you will nonetheless have your hands full with the curious ones. How much more would that be the case now while I am still present.” 3. The innkeeper and his son were completely satisfied with this and he left to take care of the morning meal. 4. It was immediately put to the table upon silver platters, as well as the wine in big silver cups. My platter and cup of wine were made of the purest gold, and I asked the innkeeper why he did this, since I am never pleased with such earthly splendor. 5. He bowed deeply before Me and said: “O Lord and Master, it is true, I know that You are never pleased with such things, and that, when we honor and praise You, that You are only pleased when it is done with a heart that is filled with pure love, but in me You have already found someone who has honored and praised You above all in his heart and who, from now on, wants to honor and praise You even more in this manner. And I thought that I would commit a sin if I would not also give You, as the highest Lord of Heaven and Earth, the honor in the way that is already given to men who are of a certain esteem. 6. For You have created the whole Earth with everything that it contains, and thus also its gold and silver. And so even these metals – which have been recognized by men for a long time already as the most noble and, as such, also the most valuable – are testifying to Your love, wisdom, might, greatness and honor. Therefore, in my simplicity, I think that it is better that You, as Creator of the gold and silver, should be honored in our human manner with these metals, instead of committing a shameful usury with it or, for its sake, to wage the most bloody wars and to invoke, as if from Hell itself, a thousandfold calamity upon poor humanity.” 7. Said I: “Yes, yes, you are of course right in this. If all men would think the same as you, and their heart would have the same attitude, then gold, silver, pearls and all costly and precious stones would not bring disaster upon them. However, because men consider it important to honor God with gold, silver, pearls and precious stones, they begin to think quite differently and assume a different attitude as well, and so it would be quite unwise of God if He would allow Himself to be honored with that which caused the most and greatest disasters among humanity over the course of history. 8. Even the patriarchs of the Earth thought like you, and they honored God before golden and silver altars and performed their honoring prayers of praise in temples richly adorned with gold, silver and all manner of precious stones, as you can see in the temple of Jerusalem. But what was the result of all that? Behold, precisely because of this did the aforementioned metals, pearls and precious stones become ever so valuable in the imagination of the people in the first place. 9. When the people ultimately developed an exaggerated idea of the value of these God-worshipping things, they began to delve ever deeper into the ground in search of gold, silver, pearls and precious stones. By doing so they slowly forgot God and thought that they would greatly honor Him and receive enormous merciful gifts if only they could lay a big piece of gold, silver or many precious stones upon the altar in His honor. 10. However, because not all men were so capable in finding what was thought to please God, they asked the patriarchs – who were also priests – how many sheep, cows, oxen, calves and bulls they would need to offer God instead of so and so much gold and silver in order to please Him as much as the one who offers pure gold and silver. 11. The elders and priests soon realized that this could easily and harmlessly be combined with religious services to create a lucrative business, and that it would also be beneficial for the edification and reassurance of the people. And so the priests began to weigh the gold, silver, pearls and precious stones, to determine their value according to the number of several animals, and later according to the amount of grain, fruits, quality construction wood, wine, dress materials and many other things. 12. Thereby originated the exchange dealings and the illicit trade, the evil and extortionate money changing, then envy, hatred, anger, persecution, lying, cheating, lewdness and earthly splendor, grandeur, superiority, pride and contempt among the people, since they no longer measured their value according to the nobleness of their souls. The only thing that mattered now is the weight of the gold and silver, pearls and precious stones, the extent of the flocks, fields and vineyards and the greater possession of many other things. 13. That the poor were envious of the wealthy and began to diminish their riches by all manner of tricks, and that it did not take long before theft, robbery and murder came into the mix, is obvious, for when materialism prevails ever more, the spiritual goes to ruin, and finally God will be to men nothing but an old, worn-out, insignificant and useless concept, one they cannot even imagine anymore. Thereupon will utter godlessness, and through it, all imaginable evils become commonplace for all in the most unscrupulous way. Men take up arms, and those who believe they are superior seek to subdue with violence those they perceive to be evil, and when this comes to pass, laws will be introduced, disregard of which will have severe punishments as consequence. And this is how rulers, and slaves as their opposite, arise on Earth. 14. Behold, all this is the result of men using the gold, silver, pearls and precious stones for external worship of whatever shape or form, thinking that these things are the most pure and noble matter. 15. Concerning the external worship and glorification of God, this has already been taken care of by God Himself since eternity, for that is why He created Heaven and all of visible nature, this entire Earth, the moon, the sun and the countless stars, in truth celestial bodies of such magnitude that can hardly be conceived of, full of light and things most beautiful, with little creatures upon their great and vast plains and fields, and this is sufficient for the external glorification of the great God and Master over everything since eternity, and so He has no need of the gold and silver, of the pearls and cut or polished stones of this Earth. 16. The only true worship and glorification that is pleasing to God should always consist of a pure heart that loves God above all else and one’s fellow man as oneself, and also, the same in truth, of faithfully keeping the commandments that He gave to all men through Moses. All else is vanity and foolishness, even when it is done by one who is pure and pleasing to God. It is true that God is outwardly honored by certain groups of people, like the Pharisees, the pagan priests and priestesses who worship idols, by apparently pious individuals who are servants with only their eyes, by hypocrites who do not truly believe in Him and never have believed in Him, and this for money and other considerable offerings: But this is not only worthless before God, it is an abomination in His eyes, and this is also the case with everything that is grand and brilliant in the eyes of the world. Remember this, My friend, for you have heard it now from the mouth of the One who does not allow Himself to be honored and praised by any form of matter, but only by a pure heart and will entirely dedicated to Him!” 17. Now quite embarrassed, the innkeeper said: “O Lord and Master from eternity, if this external adoration of mine, as I can clearly see now, is not pleasing to You, then everything shall immediately be arranged differently.” 18. Said I: “Just leave it as it is now, for the fishes are well prepared, and this time we shall savour them even in these gold and silver platters, and the wine as well. But next time, leave it be.” 19. With this the innkeeper was satisfied, and so we began to partake of the morning meal. |
