Die breite Strasse, Versuchungen und der schmale Weg zur Höhe

Die Straße, die die meisten Menschen gehen, ist breit und eben, und sie führt durch wunderschöne Gärten, die lustwandelnd durchschritten werden, sie bietet ständig Abwechslung und wird immer die Menschen locken, zu verweilen und auszukosten, was dem Wanderer reizvoll erscheint… Und niemals wird er einsam dahinzugehen brauchen, immer werden Menschen in seiner Begleitung sein, die den gleichen Weg mit gleichen Freuden und gleichen Hoffnungen gehen wie er, weil sie alle nur weltliche Freuden und Genüsse suchen, weil sie alle den gleichen Verlockungen erliegen und darum immer der eine für das Treiben des anderen Verständnis hat…

Es ist die breite Straße, die von zahllosen Menschen begangen wird, die nur wenige meiden, um schmale Pfade zu gehen, die aufwärts führen… Diese wissen, daß der schmale Weg einem anderen Ziel zuführt, und in der Erkenntnis dieses Zieles meiden sie daher die breite Straße, die – unbemerkt von den Menschen – abwärts führt und darum nicht der rechte Weg zur Höhe sein kann.

Immer wieder zweigen sich von der breiten Straße schmale Nebenwege ab, und stets werden an diesen Wegen Boten stehen und sich erbieten zur Führung denen, die den breiten Weg verlassen wollen und ernsthaften Willens nach oben streben. Wenige nur werden ihrem Anerbieten folgen, wenige nur werden sich trennen können von dem breiten Weg des Vergnügens und der Lust… Wenige nur werden derer achten, die sich ihnen zur Führung anbieten… Denn immer, wo ein schmaler Weg zur Höhe abzweigt, dort bietet die breite Straße besondere Lustbarkeiten, dort blitzen so viele Blendlichter auf, daß der schmale Weg übersehen wird und alle nur diesen Lichtern zustreben, die sie stets mehr in die Irre führen.

Diese breite Straße ist von dem Herrn der Welt angelegt, der immer dafür sorgt, daß sie nicht öde und langweilig wird ihren Passanten, und der ganz besonders dort alle Verführungskünste anwendet, wo sich die schmalen Wege nach oben abzweigen. Dann bleibt das Auge gebannt hängen, und der Mensch übersieht sehr leicht den Nebenweg und fällt jenen Verführungskünsten zum Opfer. Doch es gibt auch Menschen, die sich abwenden von allen diesen Verlockungen der Welt, weil sie ihren Unwert erkennen und weil sie ein anderes Ziel verfolgen, welches ist, Gott zu erreichen, Der niemals auf dem breiten Wege erreicht werden kann.

Und diese suchen Abwege von der breiten Straße, und sie vertrauen sich gern und bereitwillig denen an, die sie führen wollen zur Höhe. Und sie sind auch bemüht, andere Menschen auf den schmalen Pfad zu locken und ihnen das rechte Ziel vorzuhalten und sie zur Mitwanderung auf dem Wege zur Höhe zu veranlassen… Und sie alle werden ihr Ziel erreichen… Sie geben wohl irdisch so manches auf, aber sie nehmen weit Wertvolleres in Empfang… sie nehmen das Reich in Besitz, das weit Herrlicheres bietet, das aber nur erreicht werden kann durch ständiges Überwinden, nicht aber durch irdische Freuden oder weltliche Genüsse… Amen

The broad Road, Temptations and the narrow Path to On High

The road most people walk is broad and level, leading through beautiful gardens blissfully traversed, continually offering variety and always enticing people to linger and savor whatever appears attractive to the traveler… And he will never need to walk alone, there will always be others to accompany, walking the same path, with the same joys and hopes as he does, because they all seek only worldly pleasures and enjoyments, because they all succumb to the same temptations, which is why one always has understanding for the doings of the other…

It is the broad road that is traveled by countless people, which only few avoid in order to walk narrow paths that lead on high… These know that the narrow path leads to another goal, and in the knowledge of this goal they avoid the broad road as a result, which – unnoticed by the people – leads downwards, and as such cannot be the right path to the heights.

Again and again, narrow byways branch off from the broad road, and messengers will always stand along these paths, offering themselves to guide those who wish to leave the broad path and strive upwards in earnest. Only a few will take them up on their offer, only a few will be able to separate themselves from the broad path of pleasure and lust… Only a few will pay heed to those who offer to guide them… For wherever a narrow path branches off towards the heights, there the broad road offers special pleasures, there so many dazzling lights flash that the narrow path is overlooked and everyone strives only towards those lights, leading them ever more astray.

This broad road is laid out by the Lord of the World, who always takes special care that it does not become dull and boring for its passersby, specially employing all the arts of seduction where the narrow paths branch off upwards. The eye remains spellbound and the person easily overlooks the side path, falling victim to these seductive arts. But there are also those who turn away from all these temptations of the world because they recognize their worthlessness, and because they pursue a different goal, to reach God, He Who is entirely unreachable via the broad path.

They are the ones who seek detours from the broad road, gladly and willingly entrusting themselves to those who wish to lead them on high. They endeavor to beckon others onto the narrow path, presenting them the right goal and encouraging them to join them upon the path to the heights… And they will all reach their goal…. They will certainly give up many earthly things, but they will receive far more valuable things in return… They will take possession of the kingdom which offers far more glorious things, but which can only be reached by continual overcoming, not by earthly pleasures or worldly indulgences… Amen

เส้นทางที่ผู้คนส่วนใหญ่เดินนั้น
กว้างและราบเรียบ นำผ่านสวน
งดงามที่ชวนให้ชื่นใจ เต็มไป
ด้วยความหลากหลาย และเชื้อเชิญ
ให้ผู้เดินทางหยุดพัก ลิ้มรสสิ่งที่
น่าดึงดูดทั้งหลาย… และเขาจะ
ไม่ต้องเดินเพียงลำพัง เพราะจะมี
ผู้ร่วมทางเสมอ ผู้ที่เดินเส้นเดียวกัน
แบ่งปันความชื่นชมยินดีและความ
หวังเช่นเดียวกับเขา เพราะพวกเขา
ล้วนแสวงหาความเพลิดเพลินและ
ความสุขทางโลกเท่านั้น พวกเขา
ยอมพ่ายแพ้ต่อสิ่งล่อลวงชนิดเดียว
กัน และด้วยเหตุนี้ พวกเขาจึง
เข้าใจกันและกันในสิ่งที่กระทำ…

นั่นคือถนนกว้างใหญ่ที่มีผู้คน
มากมายนับไม่ถ้วนเดินอยู่ มีเพียง
ไม่กี่คนเท่านั้นที่หลีกเลี่ยง เพื่อ
เดินบนทางแคบซึ่งนำขึ้นไปเบื้อง
บน… คนเหล่านี้รู้ว่า เส้นทาง
แคบนั้นมีเป้าหมายที่แตกต่าง
และเพราะความเข้าใจในเป้าหมาย
นั้น พวกเขาจึงหลีกเลี่ยงเส้น
ทางกว้าง ซึ่งแม้ไม่เป็นที่
สังเกตของผู้คน แต่มันนำลง
สู่เบื้องล่าง และไม่อาจเป็น
หนทางที่ถูกต้องเพื่อไปสู่ที่สูง
ได้เลย

ครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่า ทางแคบจะทอด
แยกออกจากถนนกว้าง และจะมี
ผู้สื่อสารยืนอยู่ตลอดเส้นทางเหล่า
นี้ เสนอความช่วยเหลือนำทางแก่
ผู้ที่ปรารถนาจะละทิ้งเส้นทาง
กว้างและมุ่งขึ้นไปอย่างจริงจัง
มีเพียงไม่กี่คนเท่านั้นที่จะยอมรับ
ข้อเสนอนั้น มีเพียงไม่กี่คนที่จะ
สามารถแยกตัวออกจากทาง
แห่งความยินดีและราคะในโลก
ได้… มีเพียงไม่กี่คนที่จะรับฟัง
ผู้ที่ยื่นมือมานำทาง… เพราะ
ไม่ว่าเส้นทางแคบจะทอดขึ้นไป
สู่ที่สูงตรงจุดใด ถนนกว้างก็จะ
นำเสนอความเพลิดเพลินอัน
พิเศษตรงจุดนั้น พร้อมแสงระยิบ
ระยับมากมายจนทางแคบถูก
มองข้าม และทุกคนก็พากันมุ่ง
หน้าไปสู่แสงนั้น ซึ่งยิ่งทำให้
หลงทางมากยิ่งขึ้น

ถนนกว้างสายนี้ถูกจัดวางโดย
เจ้าแห่งโลก ผู้ซึ่งดูแลอย่างใกล้ชิด
ไม่ให้มันดูน่าเบื่อหรือน่าหน่ายแก่
ผู้สัญจร โดยเฉพาะเมื่อใดก็ตาม
ที่มีทางแคบแยกขึ้นไปเบื้องบน
เขาจะใช้ศิลปะแห่งการล่อลวง
ทั้งมวลเข้ามาใช้อย่างจงใจ ดวงตา
ถูกสะกดไว้ และบุคคลก็ง่ายดาย
ที่จะมองข้ามทางด้านข้าง แล้ว
ตกเป็นเหยื่อของกลลวงแห่ง
เสน่หาเหล่านั้น แต่ก็ยังมีบางคน
ที่หันหลังให้กับสิ่งล่อลวงของ
โลกทั้งหมดเหล่านี้ เพราะเขา
ตระหนักถึงความไร้ค่า และ
เพราะเขาแสวงหาเป้าหมาย
ที่แตกต่าง—เพื่อไปถึงพระเจ้า
ผู้ซึ่งไม่อาจเข้าถึงได้เลยผ่านทาง
ถนนกว้างนั้น

พวกเขาเป็นผู้ที่แสวงหาทาง
เบี่ยงจากถนนกว้าง ยินดีและ
เต็มใจมอบตนไว้กับผู้ที่ปรารถนา
จะนำพาเขาขึ้นสู่เบื้องบน พวก
เขาพยายามเรียกผู้อื่นให้มา
เดินในทางแคบ บอกให้ผู้อื่น
รู้ถึงเป้าหมายที่ถูกต้อง และ
หนุนใจให้ร่วมเดินไปกับพวก
เขาบนเส้นทางสู่ที่สูง… และ
พวกเขาทั้งหมดจะไปถึงจุด
หมายปลายทางอย่างแน่นอน…
พวกเขาอาจต้องสละสิ่งทางโลก
มากมาย แต่สิ่งที่ได้รับตอบแทน
นั้นล้ำค่ากว่ายิ่งนัก… พวกเขา
จะได้รับอาณาจักรที่มอบสิ่งอัน
รุ่งโรจน์ไพบูลย์กว่าใด ๆ แต่นั่น
คือสิ่งที่เข้าถึงได้เพียงผ่านการ
เอาชนะอย่างต่อเนื่อง หาใช่ผ่าน
ความเพลิดเพลินในโลกหรือการ
ปล่อยตัวในทางโลกไม่… อาเมน
